Formed in 2016, Laurentian Tides finds common ground in avoiding common structures which allows them to compose ideas in such a way, that the art itself tells them what to write.

While having obvious roots in progressive metal, the sound of LT culminates almost on accident from their individual interests which include but are not limited to:  thrash, punk, orchestral, world beat, jazz, industrial, and metal.

With the line up of Bill Hughes on GUITARS, Kenny Herrick on BASS, Alejandro Aguirre on VOCALS, and Richardoug on percussion, a new sound has emerged that has been compared to other giants in the music industry such as Converge, Deftones, Meshuggah, and Tool.

Nothing exists that wasn’t the result of something else.  Laurentian Tides is no different.  They are the culmination of the efforts and talents of previous bassist Thomas Chappell, Bill Hughes (guitars), Alejandro Aguirre (vocals), and Richardoug (percussion) that officially formed in 2016 as progressive metal group from Grand Rapids Michigan.  As hinted though, the events that shaped and formed this group started way earlier.

in 2013 percussionist Richardoug started off auditions via craigslist.  He found many good players, but time would reveal waining interests. Not giving up, Richardoug found Bill Hughes.  By 2014 they had stumbled across grindcore-influenced bassist Thomas  Chappell.

After realizing they had many much more interests in common, it was an instant fit.  Finally finding a vocalist and a 2nd guitarist and naming the group KARTEZHUN, they started recording their first album.

Unfortunately, once again, members decided to come and go.  Finding new vocalist Alejandro Aguirre and rebranding themselves  as a new group LAURENTIAN TIDES.  The recording of their album might have been delayed due to all the turnover, but due to this new direction, they didn’t mind.  They took all their own flavors and inspirations from greats  like Tool, Deftones, Intronaut, Animals As Leaders, Pomegranate Tiger, Porcupine Tree, Karnivool, Opeth, Soen, Devin Townsend, Norma Jean, Converge, Soulfully, and molded their own blend of tribal chaos, mathematical precision, undulating harmonies, and thought provoking prose.

In 2017 they released their first album SACRED GEOMETRY.  After performing for a few metal festivals in the MICHIGAN area, and following many gigs, activity eventually slowed down as the got ready to start pre-production of recording their next full album.  This new project was intended to be even harder and more mathematical than their first album.

just as things got started.....activity came to halt yet again do bassist Thomas

Chappell informing the group that his time with in this endeavor had came to a close.  Undaunted by their desire, they decided to keep moving forward with the new album.  Fortunately Thomas had already recorded all his tracks.

Alejandro, Bill, and Richardoug then started the process again of looking for a new bass player.  Fortunately they didn't have to wait long,  Out of a small hand full of inquiries only one peaked their interest.  So they auditioned Kenny herrick a few times. Obviously his playing style was very different, but what mattered was his attitude and skill.

After many months of getting the new bass player up to speed, on September 20th, 2019, Laurentian Tides dropped their first single MALIGN from their new album IN THE WAKE OF THE GREAT COLLAPSE.
